Online trading has become the latest trend in business spheres worldwide. There are several online trading communities catering to the specific business requirements of dealers and customers alike. Most of the online trading websites are featured with innovative tools such as chat rooms and forums. They help set up communications between registered members of a particular community. There are formal as well as informal trading communities. Compared to the formal trading sites, online informal trading websites are less popular.

Craig’s List is among the most well known informal websites around. It is a centralized network of online communities, having free classifieds and advertisements related to jobs, real estate, community services, internships, gigs and so on.Craig’s List was incepted in 1995 by Craig Newmark. Initially the services were extended only to the San Francisco Bay Area. It was only after its upgradation to a private profit organization that Craig’s List spread out to nine more American cities in 2000. Till 2007, Craiglist has established its integrated network in nearly 450 cities in 50 countries.
The popularity of Craig’s List can be measured from the number of page views per month. This website is currently listed at 34th place after it was visited more than five billion times in the recent past. Over ten million classified advertisements appear on Craig’s List every month, making it the biggest repository of classifieds in any medium.
The organization maintains stringent principles with regards to divulging ownership or fiscal information to media and public. Different sources from time to time chip in with varying figures pertaining to the company’s annual revenue. It is believed that Newmark, eBay and Buckmaster are the three primary owners of Craig’s List.
The journey of Craig’s List has not been free from controversies. For instance, on February 3, 2006, the portal was sued by the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law for supposedly allowing users to post biased housing advertisements in Chicago.
